Why is it important for people to continue creating commemorative spaces (like your website) in Australia, and the broader world, to memorialise the legacy of the Holocaust victims and survivors?

One of the main reasons we should all memorialise and remember the victims and survivors of the Holocaust is because we need to learn about how discrimination soon led to mass murder. The Holocaust was not just a single murder of six million people, but six million individuals were murdered purely based on what they believed in. The murders did not take place because of crimes or because they did something wrong, they only took place because of the prejudice the Nazi’s wrongfully held against them. We can also grasp the struggle between the powerless and the overwhelmingly powerful killing machine known as Hitler. He was able to silently rise up the ranks to eventually have enough power to convince Germany to change their ideas around the Jews and other social groups. It’s very interesting whilst also concerning to learn about what Hitler did to the Jews, I would always be left wondering how people could do such horrible things to innocent people. It’s crazy to think that there is still discrimination throughout our world today and when power is given to the wrong person it can be used to destroy people’s lives. Learning about it is almost like a warning from the past. Learning about the Holocaust and the experiences is extremely important because these events are how our world is currently shaped today. Hopefully whilst learning about it, we can grasp how unkind and horrible it is to judge or hold a prejudice against someone based on their race, religion, gender or sexuality. The Holocaust is a constant reminder for our world to be a better place and to hopefully encourage the population to treat the people in it as equals and with respect.
